Tsum Valley – The Hidden Valley Trekking
Tsum Valley trekking is one of the most off-the-beaten-path treks nestled in the Ganesh Himalayan range of Nepal. The trek begins from Sotikhola, after an 8-hour bumpy bus ride from Kathmandu. But once you enter the tranquil valley, you quickly forget the dusty journey.
Ideal for trekkers of all ages, the gradual elevation gain makes this trek smooth and enjoyable. The valley itself is breathtaking, offering stunning mountain views and lush rainforest scenery. This relatively short trek provides a perfect balance of adventure and cultural immersion.
The trail follows the Budi Gandaki River, turning left at a new bridge before reaching Lokpa, the first settlement in Tsum Valley. From there, the path continues along the Shiar Khola. The valley is rich in flora and fauna, and its Tibetan Buddhist culture remains deeply intact.
As you reach Chhokang Paro, the valley widens, and you’ll see locals cultivating wheat, buckwheat, barley, and potatoes. Yaks play an essential role here, used both for plowing fields and carrying loads. Female yaks provide milk and compost. The people of Tsum Valley strongly adhere to Buddhist beliefs, leading to a strict vegetarian lifestyle — meat and related products are rarely found here.
Locals predominantly speak Tibetan and wear traditional Bakhhu garments, made from colorful handmade fabrics woven from yak and sheep wool.
Highlights:
- Rich Tibetan Buddhist culture with monasteries, stupas, and traditional villages
- Stunning views of Mount Ganesh and glaciers
- Sacred sites like Mu Gompa, Milrappa Cave, and the old rock-built settlements
- Unique flora and fauna including Lang Tang larch forests, musk deer, monkeys, and more
- Opportunity to explore lesser-known areas such as Chho Syang and Gumba Lungden
