Kanchenjunga (8,586 m), the world’s third highest mountain, lies in eastern Nepal along the border with Sikkim, India. This epic trek offers a spectacular blend of natural beauty, cultural experiences, and thrilling adventure.
The trail gradually climbs along rushing river valleys, leading trekkers toward the snow-capped north face of Kanchenjunga. After several dramatic days navigating glaciers and high mountain terrain, the trek culminates at the stunning Pang Pema base camp.
One of the great appeals of Kanchenjunga trekking is its remote and peaceful atmosphere — you can trek for days without encountering other foreign trekking groups. The route suffered little damage during the 2015 earthquake, and any issues have been addressed by Nepal’s National Park services and TAAN (Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal) since 2017-18.
Highlights of the Kanchenjunga Trek:
- Explore the pristine Kanchenjunga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
- Experience a rich biodiversity including rhododendrons (Nepal’s national flower), elusive snow leopards, blue sheep, deer, Tibetan wolves, and the Danphe (Nepal’s national bird)
- Discover traditional villages where locals rely on domesticated yaks and mountain cows for milk, meat, and daily necessities
- Stay in basic but authentic tea houses and guesthouses within the park — simpler than those in Annapurna or Everest regions but full of local charm
- Cross challenging high passes like Selele La (4,480m) and Sinon La (4,646m), requiring good fitness and acclimatization
- Trek to both the north and south base camps on the Nepalese side (note: a full circuit around Kanchenjunga is not possible due to the international border)
This trek takes over 25 days and combines off-the-beaten-path exploration with stunning mountain landscapes, making it one of the most thrilling trekking experiences in Nepal’s eastern region.
