Karnali River Expedition – A Himalayan Adventure in Nepal’s Wild West
“Nepal’s longest and largest wilderness river expedition through the untouched and pristine heart of western Nepal.”
The Karnali River Expedition is one of the most exhilarating Himalayan base camp-style adventures, offering a thrilling mix of big-water rafting, remote jungle exploration, and cultural immersion. Operated by Navigate Outdoor, we specialize in both private and commercial rafting expeditions across some of the best rivers in Nepal and the greater Nepalese Himalaya.
Among all, the Karnali River stands out. Often referred to as the “Jewel of the Himalayas”, this river originates in Tibet and flows south through Nepal before joining the Ganges basin in India. It’s a premier destination for those looking to combine Nepal adventure with raw natural beauty.
The Karnali River, Nepal’s longest and largest, drains most of the Far West – a region often nicknamed Nepal’s “Wild West.” This lower section of the river delivers exactly that: dramatic canyons, unspoiled jungles, rare wildlife, and some of the best scenery in Nepal.
Adrenaline-seekers will be thrilled by the challenging Class III – IV+ rapids, especially after the “Elbow” near Lohare Khola, where the river narrows into wild canyons and rushes through non-stop rapids down to the Seti confluence. This stretch features big-volume, high-energy whitewater that rivals the likes of Sun Koshi and Tamor River expeditions—two other top-rated Himalayan rafting adventures.
The western Karnali Province is a treasure trove of authentic Nepalese culture. This region offers not only rafting in Nepal, but also complements treks like the Upper Mustang Trek, Langtang Trek, and even the Everest Base Camp Trek in their sense of isolation and exploration.
Life here is still lived in the traditional way: nomadic Raute people craft wooden utensils and trade them in local villages. Navigate Outdoor supports these communities by sourcing local food and products during our trips, strengthening the connection between adventure tourism and sustainable Nepal trekking.
Looking for a softer adventure? The Bheri River, also located in Karnali Province, is ideal for families looking for Nepal vacation packages that include fishing, rafting, and gentle nature exploration. Our goal is to empower local youth and bring new opportunities through Nepal adventure tourism.
In addition to Karnali, we organize epic multi-day rafting adventures like the Sun Koshi River Expedition, and Tamor River Expedition. These are perfect for combining with treks like the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, Annapurna Circuit Trek, or the famed EBC Trek Nepal.
