Karnali River Expedition – A Himalayan Adventure in Nepal’s Wild West

“Nepal’s longest and largest wilderness river expedition through the untouched and pristine heart of western Nepal, The Karnali River Whitewater Rafting.”

The Karnali River Whitewater Rafting offers one of the most exhilarating Himalayan adventures. It combines big-water rafting, remote jungle exploration and rich cultural immersion. Navigate Outdoor specializes in private and commercial rafting expeditions across Nepal’s best rivers.

The Karnali River stands out as the Jewel of the Himalayas. This river originates in Tibet and flows through Nepal. It is Nepal’s longest and largest river. The lower section features dramatic canyons, unspoiled jungles and rare wildlife.

Adrenaline seekers enjoy challenging Class III to IV+ rapids. The most exciting stretch begins after the Elbow near Lohare Khola. The river narrows into wild canyons with non-stop whitewater action. This section rivals the famous Sun Koshi and Tamor River expeditions.

The western Karnali Province is known as Nepal’s Wild West. It offers authentic Nepalese culture and untouched natural beauty. This region complements remote treks like Upper Mustang Trek, Langtang Trek and Everest Base Camp Trek.

Local Raute people still live traditionally in this area. They craft wooden utensils and trade in nearby villages. Navigate Outdoor supports these communities by sourcing local food and products.

Looking for a gentler option? The Bheri River is perfect for families. It provides calm rafting, fishing and peaceful nature exploration. This makes it ideal for Nepal vacation packages.

We also organize multi-day expeditions on the Sun Koshi River and Tamor River. These adventures pair well with Annapurna Base Camp Trek, Annapurna Circuit Trek or EBC Trek Nepal. Contact Navigate Outdoor for unforgettable Himalayan rafting and trekking combinations.

Tour Amenities

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you'll be warmly welcomed by Navigate Outdoor’s trip leader and transferred to your hotel in Thamel, Kathmandu’s vibrant tourist district. Today is about settling in and resting after your journey. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner and explore the bustling streets of Thamel.

Enjoy breakfast with a stunning view of the Himalayas. Today, we’ll explore Kathmandu – a UNESCO World Heritage City. Visit sites like Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Pashupatinath Temple, and local markets. In the evening, our trip leader will conduct a pre-departure briefing, covering everything from river safety to logistics, equipment, and environmental awareness.

After an early breakfast, we fly to Nepalgunj and drive about 4–5 hours to Surkhet, the gateway to western Nepal. If time permits, we begin a short rafting section and set up camp along the river. Otherwise, we camp near the put-in and prepare gear for the journey ahead.

We begin our river journey with a gentle introduction to Class II–III rapids. Along the way, we pause for lunch at a scenic waterfall or beach and visit a local village for interaction and photos. After lunch, we tackle our first major rapid, “Cotton Pony,” before setting up camp under the stars.

Today features exciting Class III rapids, including “Sweetness” and “Humans for Lunch.” We stop at Jungleghat, an ancient village where we cross a suspension bridge and enjoy a local cup of tea. Rapids like “Jailhouse Rock” and “Inversion” await just downstream. Tonight’s campsite, Scorpion Beach, lies within a lush forested canyon.

Enjoy a rest day at camp. Choose from activities like yoga, meditation, volleyball, or a short hike to nearby villages. Learn about local customs, daily life, or try your hand at kayaking or reading rivers. This day is flexible and designed to let you recharge or explore.

Get ready for the biggest rapids of the expedition! Today includes thrilling runs like “Godshouse”, “Juicer,” “Flip ‘n Strip,” “Snapshot,” and “Freight Train.” This is a day full of adrenaline-pumping action and unforgettable scenery through deep canyon walls.

The river mellows, offering a chance to relax and enjoy the scenery. Today’s float offers kayaking opportunities and river guiding practice. We pass by traditional villages, where locals greet us and offer glimpses into their river-based lifestyle.

Today’s float reveals more of rural Nepal's magic—fishermen casting nets, dugout canoes, and children swimming out to meet us. We pass through forests and farmlands, witnessing the local rhythm of life. Tonight is our final night camping by the riverside—optionally under the open sky.

We rise early and raft for a final 2–3 hours to our take-out point in Chisapani. Keep your eyes open—you might spot a Gangetic Dolphin or rare wildlife. After lunch at a local restaurant, we drive to Nepalgunj and fly back to Kathmandu, where a hot shower and farewell dinner await.

Enjoy a free day to unwind or explore more of Kathmandu. Visit Asan Bazaar for local spice and produce markets, or pick up souvenirs in Thamel. Savor authentic Nepali dishes and soak in your final evening in Nepal.

We’ll arrange airport transfers based on your flight time. Please check with our team the night before for pickup arrangements. We hope your Karnali adventure has been unforgettable – Namaste & safe travels!
